Reviewing 2021 | fandom

Fandom 2021: a summary

  • 40 movies: 8 rewatches, 4 animation, 2 stand up comedy
  • 31 books: 10 re-reads
  • 25 serials: 5 western animation, 5 anime and 7 reality tv
  • 4 games, 2 in progress

Main fandom: the witcher is the main offender for the category once again. sorry about that lmao.

Fave film: gotta say, i had a good laugh with addio fottuti musi verdi. i didn't expect to see something like that from an italian production. animation-wise, luca was such a good tm: the plot was simple but heartwarming, the quality of the animation was stunning and the setting was so accurate it hurt my heart.
edit: we ended up watching a lot of movies while i was off on vacation and so the harder they fall deserves a mention.

Fave Book: aaah I read so many good things these year!! If I had to go with genuinely good i would pick this is how you lose the time war, by amal el-mohtar and max gladstone. it's queer, it's well written, it's interesting in its shape and it left me with a hole in my soul. a worldbuilding mention to kushiel's dart and its sequels by jacqueline carey. it's simultaneously trashy and self-indulgent, and incredibly well researched; fantasy books that are set on totally-not-earth usually cover not-europe as their setting, but carey brings us as far as the depths of not-africa, and it was really interesting. another special mention to raven boys because listen, i was genetically primed to fall in love with ronan lynch and im not even sorry. he got me to finally buzz my hair, which is objectively the best decision i took this year.

fave album or song: im gonna cheat for this. i haven't listened yet to the amazing devil because well. i had my chances with crying at train stations, mr batey. that's what happens whenever i try. so i'll take my time if it's all the same to you.

Fave Serial: do i even have a favorite for this category? well i did enjoy loki, which was one of the big expectations for this year. the very first episodes especially --i missed watching tom hiddleston doing his thing. gentleman jack made me thirsty for 1830s fashion and suranne jones needs to be stopped (no please don't stop, keep glancing at the camera and make me giggle like the helpless queer i am). i guess the real big one was strappare lungo i bordi, once again an italian production, so accurately painful you can't help but laugh through tears.

Favorite Game: ok so, for some reason i don't remember which games i played this year?? and the ones i remember i haven't finished and they're both amazing so im gonna mention them both. hollow knight is kicking my ass, im terrible at metroidvanias, but it's pretty and satisfying and frustrating and i can smell the lore from here. disco elysium--is weird as fuck. i barely tried it but there's something weirdly compelling about it. i can't wait to finish HK so i can go back to it.

Best fandom discovery: i probably need to mention raven boys. i haven't written anything (yet?) for it but it definitely consumed my brain for a hot second there.

BIGGEST disappointment: oof. night of the wolf definitely missed the mark. i was excited when i found out that we were going to have the fall of kaer morhen in official lore finally, but it was genuinely a disaster (i even wrote a little rant here if you want to read it). it doesn't help that the same writer kept hitting the dead horse within a certain episode of witcher s02, but at least it didn't drag over the rest of the season.

BIGGEST SQUEE: absolutely cheating here and going for the witcher s02. i just missed my old boy, okay? it was really good to see the gang again. it's not perfect but it's back and it's still my playground and i missed them ;;

most missed old fandom: i missed it so much i ended up writing for it: fullmetal alchemist dragged me into royed hell. hunter x hunter alllmost managed to make me write something but this year my energy levels were basically non existent so. (i definitely have a wip somewhere)

fandom to try this year: i don't know, honestly. i want to write more of my dnd characters. i feel like after we interrupted the campaign i haven't dedicated them the time they deserve.

FAN THINGS TO LOOK FORWARD TO: i haven't checked what's going to happen next year, but my bookclub is about to read six of crows and im extremely curious to get introduced to the grishaverse. we'll see.
