Reviewing 2022 | fandom

fandom 2022: a summary
  • 25 movies: 3 rewatches, 6 animation
  • 42 books: 4 re-read, 1 did not finish
  • 6 comics
  • 44 serials: 2 rewatches, 4 reality tv, 10 western animation, 6 anime
  • 14 games: 9 pc games, 1 rpg, 1 browser, 3 mobile

a lot of new media this year, a lot of strange stuff that hit me right in the guts. a seed of something that i hope to grow in the next year.

Main fandom
i would say that my main fandom for the third year in a row is witcher for various reasons, but i've spent some intense weeks with disco elysium and the locked tomb as well, so they get a special mention.

Fave film
can't really think of a memorable live action movie for this year, (venom: let there be carnage, maybe, for that one ma vaffanculo delivery in the italian dub) but i finally watched spirited away — my experience with ghibli is extremely limited so im glad i managed to fill this void.

Fave book
i'm going to mention it again later, but harrow the ninth takes the cake.

Fave album or song
what a weird year for music. i spent only a month listening to it, but i think i will always associate 2022 to we don't talk about bruno from the enchanto ost and wild blue yonder by the amazing devil, because those were the earworms that plagued me while i was at the hospital back in february. only the latter counts as favorite, probably.

Fave serial
dirk gently's holistic detective agency was fucking great, i had a lot of fun guessing and speculating! special mention to community since everyone and their mothers has seen it and i finally have too, now, and ted lasso, bc it was such a little jewel. re: animated stuff, i finally watched ducktales (woo-hoo!) and had a hell of a good time with inside job: it's good to see that the folk who worked on gravity falls still fucking got it. this year was also a re-discovery for anime, and the mention goes to chainsaw man, because it's always a joy to watch MAPPA flex the heck out of their animators. btw what the fuck is going on with the gay and wondrous life of caleb gallo? i still don't know but it's fantastic and if you don't know what it is go on youtube and watch that shit because it will change your life. in worse, probably.

Fave game
i've played some good shit this year! i mentioned last year disco elysium as something weird as fuck, and i was right: it is like nothing i've played before: something about the mood, the style and the characters... i feel like i came through the other side a fundamentally different person. special mention to hollow knight, which was art-wise and lore-wise extremely interesting and well done, even if holy fuck i can't play platforms without cheating, and assassin's creed: the ezio trilogy. i didn't expect to get so attached to ezio and desmond, i struggled with getting into the first game but by the end i was ready to die for them. a special mention to in pitch we are preserved, available on itch.io, bc it's the first solo rpg i played and i had a great time with it. there's something meditative about playing these kinds of games -- definitely looking forward to experiment more in 2023!

Best fandom discovery
no doubt about it, the locked tomb was huge for me, but i sort of knew about it already (i was just keeping it for a rainy day, and boy, did i get rainy days this year), so im picking becky chambers: her wayfarer cycle was fucking stunning, even if it doesn't spark fanfiction in my brain it definitely sparked a lot of joy.

Biggest disappointment
there wasn't a real big disappointment this year, but i had a few meh moments. i was sorry to see that while our flag means death is a lot of fun, it didn't stay with me longer than the time it took me to watch the show. i was disappointed in stranger things s4 too, because, even if there's a couple of storylines im deeply interested in, the new extra-long format is fucking ridiculous and it makes me sort of angry. oh another disappointment was the witcher re-casting nonsense: i don't actually care about hcavill but im a creature of habit and i had grown to like his geralt; it's going to take me a while to get used to the new guy. we'll see.

Biggest squee
nona the ninth! even if im very new to this party, when the book came out i was yelling my head off.

Most missed old fandom
i forgot how much of a good time boku no hero academia was! and i missed shouwa genroku rakugo shinjuu so much i had to rewatch some bits of it. but really this year i've written so little i missed basically everything.

Fandom to try next year
i have a bunch of plots that i put away during the years that i never managed to write. i still need to try out hunter x hunter and the raven boys, for fuck's sake. so maybe i will do something with those.

Fan things to look forward to
i'm a little worried, but looking forward to the witcher s3, to the next episodes of helluvaboss and obviously alecto the ninth. i made myself a list for a bunch of things i need to catch up with that have been around since forever but have been a blind spot in my mind, so that's also something to look forward to.
