reviewing 2024 | fandom
the way i had to literally open my trackers bc i have no idea what happened to my media consumption this year.
▲ main fandoms
i’m going to shamelessly admit that i’ve been simping for the MAFverse the whole year. whatever comes out of his pen (both in terms of art and writing) has been gold for my creative itches. shamelessly plugging the under garden and the blog where he sometimes yaps about yet-to-be-seen characters. somewhat connected to it, baldur’s gate has also been going strong even if i haven’t actually managed to play the game yet lmao. i’ve also had a lot of fun playing revamping an old original character with a friend
▲ good films
easiest question ever this year because i somehow watched just. one movie. challengers was a good time though, i also enjoyed the photography and the cinematography. if i had to give it a criticism, the narration kind of suffered a bit just before the final stretch — but im being picky. it was both genuine good quality and also a delight to shitpost about.
▲ them readings
my journey through the realm of the elderlings series by robin hobbs continues. i finally managed to read mad ship and ship of destiny, concluding therefore the second trilogy of the series. even if i still feel that some chapters could have been an email, i still grew attached to most of the characters, and the worldbuilding is interesting and well made. that’s pretty much it — though i did read self-editing for writers as a non-fiction bonus.
▲ what about the music
i befriended a bunch of audiophiles this year so my listening got diversified af (have a taste from my bucket playlist); most songs come from blorbo-related feels, but i also dipped my toes back into nostalgic vibes, finding again stuff that i entirely forgot. didn’t do much in terms of live music except one concert (birkin tree), and my usual irish dancing nights + sessions — which kind of died off in the second half of the year bc my energy levels weren’t great.
▲ serial tv and animated neighbors
small batch but pretty curated. the first half of the year was very anime-oriented; caught up with a bunch of things (special mention: beastars s2) and watched things with friends (special mention: kamonohashi ron bc amano-sensei, and fune wo amu, bc they really be making anime about anything — including making a dictionary. a nice watch though, chill and feel-good). i didn’t see much else except finally seeing what the fuss is about interview with the vampire (more about that later) and flesh and bone, which was intense but a very good watch.
▲ the gamer corner
no baldur’s game no party — jk. i played tiny glade, which is a fun digital toy that lets you build lito cottages and villages, and i was gifted the longing, which i am enjoying more than i thought i would (even if i am not playing very often.) im back to my watch-walkthrough-instead-of-playing nonsense, and i enjoyed still wakes the deep — the writing is excellent, for the glorified platformer it is. genuinely terrifying and emotional.
▲ fandom discovery
interview with the vampire, the tv series. i remembered not liking the book nor the movie, when i had to read it for my contemporary english literature class in uni (tru story) and i heard odd things about the casting (a black man playing louis?) but then i saw armand and the gif where he reveals his og name (i have a beloved OC called the same) and i got curious. so now here we are. clowning. special mention to boulet brother’s dragula, i missed watching reality tv and drag queens and horror and sewing, and this falls perfectly on the cross of all vibes.
▲ all the ragrets
genuinely upset about hazbin hotel. i wasn’t holding my breath — when this sort of indie production gets in the hands of big name corps, it rarely turns to good things — but i expected something… different. i did not expect the “disney song” vibe, which kind of put me off the whole thing (special mention to angel dust’s song in italian because for the first time in a while the localisation was hilarious and well made). pity.
▲ squee moment of the year
pretty much every time the under garden updated lmao. special shout out to the whole month of june — i went to dokomi for the first time (and it was my first con after a while), ThUG chapter 6 had my favourite character in it a lot, i had some very fun yap sessions in DMs with my friends, and it was when i decided to revamp my OC
▲ missed old fandom
i haven’t really had time nor energy to touch anything about the raven boys this year but i missed them. maybe i will find a moment to revisit… also bc iirc the graphic novel is about to come out pretty soon. maybe it’ll give me inspiration
▲ fandom to try next year
i have no idea tbh. i am toying with the idea of writing something very self-indulgent for stray souls —which is the only MAFverse i haven’t written for yet lmao— but idk. maybe i could watch arcane, now that it’s officially over (i always had a vague interest in viktor, and i have friends who promised me to watch it with me)
▲ looking forward to
first of all, interview with the vampire s3. there’s no release date for alecto this year, but i’m looking forward to news about that, i think. in the meanwhile, i’m personally looking forward to reading my next elderlings trilogy — the tawny man. also, since i finally own a ps5 now (just missing a screen and a place to set it up) i hope to finally manage to play baldur’s gate. lmao. im also obviously looking forward to the next chapters of ThUG and to see what my own creative playmates have in store…
