[Event] Three Weeks for Dreamwidth Rec Fest!
Apr. 25th, 2026 07:04 am
Come join in for fun, memes, activities, and more ♥
Three weeks for Dreamwidth is an event to promote activity on Dreamwidth by creating content that will stay exclusively on Dreamwidth for the three whole weeks (go ham after May 15th!).
Here's the list of suggested themes for this year! Any type of fanwork can be recced (fic, art, meta, vids, icons, etc). The only requirement is that the fanwork be related to BNHA. Keep in mind the guidelines around warnings for nsfw/potentially upsetting content when gathering your recs, anything goes otherwise.
For this year's themed recs.... drumroll!!
Recs Themes
1. A fanwork with a favourite trope of yoursIf you don't have a rec for everything, that's fine, share anyway! Likewise, you can share more than one per theme or make several lists based on ship or whatever you like. There is no time limit either if you come across this later.
2. A fanwork older than two years
3. A fanwork that has under 100 kudos/likes/etc
4. A bonus rec of your choice :D
You are welcome to make a new post to share, or answer in the comments, either directly or with a link to your journal if you posted the rec list there. Cross-posting on Dreamwidth is fine but please wait until May 15th to share elsewhere!
( Template suggestion, if you'd like to make a new post )

A couple years ago, I did a daily tarot prompt (see this tag), which I'm thinking about doing again, but realising that consistency isn't going to be my best point, I'm not sure if it's a good idea. I guess I could draw a card when I remember to do it, and not commit to writing a drabble/ficlet every day? I really did have fun last time, but I also wasn't... fully burned out. so
Thoughts?

The Friday Five: High School/College
Apr. 24th, 2026 01:01 pm1. What decade did you attend/are you attending high school or college?
The 80s!
2. What clothing fashion from that time are you glad/do you wish went out of style?
Puffed up curly perms - Nancy and Karen Wheeler make me cringe.
3. Do you still listen to the music from your high school/college years on a regular basis?
Oh, yeah, I found punk rock and never looked back. Social Distortion, Ramones, Black Flag, Bad Religion, Bad Brains, XTC. I loved New Wave also. I also love the newer post-punk/pop-punk bands like Green Day.
4. What hairstyle/hair color did/do you wear during high school/college?
Surprisingly similar to the wolf cut I currently have, but way more spiked up on top.
5. What was/is "the cool thing to do" while in high school/college?
In high school, we had an open campus and a mod schedule, so none of the teachers or administrators knew when anyone was supposed to be anywhere. We all left campus for lunch as soon as one of us could drive. Sometimes we came back for afternoon classes, sometimes we didn't.
My college was huge so I couldn't really say what the overall 'cool' thing to do was. My group tended to have pig roasts and camp outs in the nearby national forest, so that was pretty cool (sometimes literally - it got cold in those mountains!).

Gratitude Journaling
Apr. 23rd, 2026 12:19 amFirstly, hello! I'm new to the comm.
Nearly three years ago now, I stumbled upon an Instagram reel that suggested you write down one good thing that happened to you every week on a piece of paper, and collect them in a jar. I thought this was such a lovely idea, so I naturally took it one step higher: I was going to write down one good thing that happened to me every day, in a journal.
Surprisingly, I've maintained this consistently for over two years, since the start of 2024. I'm the queen of never following through with my ideas/ambitions.
Naturally, the idea has evolved into its own thing. I generally write down something that made me happy in the day, if even just a little bit. I typically ask myself, "what am I grateful for today?" The answers don't have to be deep or philosophical, they can be (and often are) as simple as "the weather was nice."
On the surface, I know the sound of "gratitude journaling" can sound corny and even useless, but this has genuinely become an important part of my daily routine. It feels even cornier to admit that, when I truly reflect on it, this has positively affected my thinking as a whole. Apparently taking a moment to reflect on your day and pick out the happier parts does, in fact, do something!
A quick sampling of "answers" I've written down:
* Finished book, found a really cool sonic comic
* New intern was at work
* Had a BOMB ass nap
* The sunset was BEAUTIFUL!!!!!
* Got on my computer finally and did some Tumblr editing
* Dinner was yummy soup & grilled cheese
These are all short ones. Sometimes I list a couple of things if my day was eventful.
I find that on more "boring" days, I struggle to find something truly "good." Since on these "boring" days I typically have done nothing out of the ordinary. On eventful days, I have a plethora of things to write down. I even find it easier to find something to write down on crummy days, since the happier parts are more shiny and sparkly against a backdrop of grey.
I want to leave this off with an encouragement to try this for just one week to see if it works for you. I started it because it sounded fun and very, very simple—and it is! I also had a journal I needed to do something with. I wasn’t considering the positive impact it would have on me in the long term—so don't expect this to be some miracle ritual, if you're anything like me. Anyway, try it out and see if the routine fits comfortably into your schedule.

Search maintenance
Apr. 22nd, 2026 09:19 amHappy Wednesday!
I'm taking search offline sometime today to upgrade the server to a new instance type. It should be down for a day or so -- sorry for the inconvenience. If you're curious, the existing search machine is over 10 years old and was starting to accumulate a decade of cruft...!
Also, apparently these older machines cost more than twice what the newer ones cost, on top of being slower. Trying to save a bit of maintenance and cost, and hopefully a Wednesday is okay!
Edited: The other cool thing is that this also means that the search index will be effectively realtime afterwards... no more waiting a few minutes for the indexer to catch new content.
Cursed Witch: proofreading complete
Apr. 22nd, 2026 07:41 amI just finished proofreading the latest draft that has aaaaall the changes that came from beta-reader feedback *stares into void* As usual, this is the only step of my process in which my word count gets smaller, although not that much (just by 1%!). Final (#2) draft stands at 58k words.
Unfortunately I've also reached the stage where I hate everything because clearly I'm a garbage person who can only write garbage stories etc etc etc *sigh* I wish that wasn't part of the process. Every time I finish reading a book and the author in the acknowledgements goes "Thanks to my spouse for talking me off the ledge whenever I started hating this story/stopped believing in it/etc" I grumble "WHERE IS MY SPOUSE!!!" lol. I'm going to wait a couple of weeks for the yucky feelings to scatter before contacting the kind souls who volunteered to beta-read. I was thinking of giving folks 5 weeks to beta again? I realise this might be smack-bang in the middle of end of academic year shenanigans for students and teachers though, so I'll have to ask and see if I should wait to align the timeline... I would prefer that over getting the feedback at random times over many months if possible, because I know my brain is going to start working on stuff as soon as the feedback comes in.
I also have a pretty graph!

I'm never tracking daily again!! Lol. I guess it's not really actionable. It reflects the rest of my life more than the writing. "Here I wasn't home... here I was sick... here something stressful was happening..." I like the idea of weekly tracking more, just like I like yearly challenges like
getyourwordsout more than once-off events like NaNoWriMo: even if it never feels like I'm doing enough, it's good to see that consistency even small pays off over time. Daily tracking is never consistent!!
You can also see how I went crazy last weekend, like "Fuck the plaaaaan I'm finishing THIS WEEKEND even if it KILLS ME LEROYYYYYY JENKIIIINS" and then it killed me and I wasn't anywhere near finished, but really burnt out instead. I did One Last Push this morning because the end felt so within sight. But the bad feels are still here :C And I had to change the graph to add more days and I'll have to write myself a tutorial about that because I fuck things up every time I try to tweak something.
What comes next? Well, for the witch, contacting beta-readers, getting feedback, praying there are no more structural issues lurking (but if there are, so be it), let the feedback simmer. Starting in a couple of weeks.
More immediately, I'm taking a few days' breather then I'm going to start on the Soul Thief structural edits. I have the detailed plan, what needs to change, what needs to go, 15 new scenes to write for all the missing bits... I'm guessing it'll take a few months. I'm looking forward to it, though, and hopeful I'm truly solving the major problems early before any beta-reader takes a look!
I find it interesting, carrying the hopelessness of the Cursed Witch together with the joy/excitement/hope about the Soul Thief. Obviously, that one is incomplete so it still could be anything. This is one of the reasons I always want to find ways to write more. It's not just because "moar words moar better rawwwr", but if I have other projects in various stages to immediately lose myself into, I don't dwell as much on the bad, nor feel it as much. In 2020 and 2021, for Several Reasons (tm) I was writing about 20k words/month, and I think writing so much really fed into itself well: like, sure, damn, that story didn't work out the way I hoped it would. But rather than think "I am This is crap" I could simply believe that the next story would be better, because I'd already started it, and if nothing else I wouldn't repeat the exact same mistake(s) with it.

An April Update
Apr. 21st, 2026 07:09 pmHere's some of the things I've been up to in April. Work has been crazy busy since the middle of March when two of the people I work with quit and their last day was on the same day. One quit in the normal way with 2-weeks notice; the other ghosted us to the point where we were afraid something had happened to them. Anyway, I've been pulling the load for three people, although we have one replacement but they have a learning curve.
Some of the fun things I've been doing:
We saw Project Hail Mary in the theaters last weekend. So glad we went while it was still there - everyone I know has been recommending this to me. And they were all absolutely correct! What an amazing movie!
I'm back on Breath of the Wild - I'm doing a semi hundred percent. I'm NOT going to find every single of the 900 koroks. What I am doing is every one of the original shrines, all the side quests, all the DLC items, and all the DLC shrines. I've got one more original shrine to go, several DLC items, and 15 of the 16 DLC shrines. Plenty of things to do yet! *dances happily*
I caved and got a Switch 2. It is definitely faster and the joycons work better than my old Switch. My amibos all work on it, too.
I am planning to offer Dreamsheep again for
3weeks4dreamwidth - keep an eye out for that post making the offer.

TV Shows
- Stranger Things: I watched the whole season last week. I'm very glad for people who tagged their posts and put spoilers behind cut tags - I was able to remain unspoiled for the whole thing. I have thoughts, but mainly, I'm sad that it's over. I thought the passing of the torch from The Party to Holly's group was perfect. I enjoyed that Robin was back to being smart and competent instead of whatever she was in S4.
- Bridgerton: I'm in the middle of Season 4. So far, I'm enjoying it.
- To Your Eternity: I watched Season 3 of this anime. I highly recommend this show for the first two season. S3 was very sketchy at first but managed to redeem itself by the last 3 episodes.
