reviewing 2k19 | fandom
I've watched 34 movies (which would be a perfectly respectable result if 7 of them weren't re-watches); my watchlist isn't getting any shorter any time soon. I also failed my goodreads challenge, even though it wasn't as bad as I thought: 11 books instead of 15. It's still kinda disappointing though, I hoped to do so much better! On the other hand, I read diverse things, between prose and graphic novels. The category I did better is serial-tv: 11 live-action shows, 10 anime titles, 7 western animation shows. I also played lots of games between videogames (8 titles) and ttrpgs (2-3 titles). I also went to the theater, which was something I really missed. Too bad it's so expensive.
Let's look into the details, shall we?
▲ Your main fandom of the year?
I always hate this question so much because I always forget to track my squeeing!
▲ Your favourite film watched during the year?
I watched a lot of good TM classics this year, and among those I really want to mention Taxi Driver and Léon the Professional, but the best new movie was Shazam! What a good time.
▲ Your favourite book read during the year?
Picking Good Omens feel like cheating, but it's the truth! Mostly because I didn't let myself read good books this year. Special mention to Watchmen, though I feel like this category is more about prose than graphic novels. That was a trip and a half.
▲ Your favourite album or song to listen to during the year?
It feels like a good song to describe my year is The Boogie Man by Todd Rollins & His Orchestra; the playlist I've listened to the most was the one I made for my own dnd character, and that's the first track.
▲ Your favourite live action tv show this year?
Such a good year for this category. Good Omens takes the cake, because it was just amazing on every level; I missed David Tennant so much and it was great seeing Michael Sheen in such a fun role, but to be honest everything just pushed my buttons. I couldn't not fall in love with it at first sight. Umbrella Academy gets a mention because it has the best fake violin playing I've ever seen in a tv show, and also because everything about it is fucking amazing and I loved Five's character so much; another mention for The Boys, because they weren't cowards, and Pose, even though I'm still halfway season 2, because you just gotta appreciate well done queer shows. The ballroom scene from the Eighties is such a fascinating part of our history, the other side of the AIDS crisis -- we know that people died, but I always feel like we forgot that people lived and fought and wanted.
▲ Your favourite animated tv show this year?
I finally decided to make a separate question for this category, especially since this year I've watched quite a lot of animation. On the Western side I feel like I can't pick, because I liked every single show I've decided to watch, but I'm going to make a special mention to Hazbin Hotel and Helluvaboss; I actually have mixed feelings about Viv's work, because there are a lot of things I could criticize about it -- qualitatively speaking -- but on the other hand I just had so much fun with both series' pilots. Something about them just works.
I watched a lot of anime this year; I finally watched hunter x hunter (2011) which I really liked up until the last arc and its mess of boring exposition. I also finally watched Mob Psycho 100, whose animation was absolutely insane and I loved to bits. Special mention to Dororo, that as a reboot was amazingly well designed and incredibly touching, and Yakusoku no Neverland because it was mind-bendingly terrifying and compelling. It's been a while since I enjoyed animanga so much: I even read the manga because I had to know what happened next. I can't wait for the next season.
▲ Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
Mmmm hard to say. Maybe Good Omens? I haven't done a lot of interacting with fandom lately.
▲ Your biggest disappointment of the year?
Avengers: Endgame was just a huge pile of bullshit. I'm almost glad that Tony is dead now, so I won't have a reason to throw away my money next year. MCU is over for me. It was a good run until it lasted, but it's been just one disappointment after the other, after Civil War. Another disappointment was Bioshock Infinite: I was promised an amazing game with enjoyable gameplay and an interesting story, but I actually felt much more compelled by Bioshock 2, which I hear is the one that people liked the least. One last mention to Love, Sex + Robots, which was supposed to be an interesting take on animation and sci-fi, but all I've found was petty sexism and violence. There were a few good takes, but not enough to save the whole project, imho. They could've done better.
▲ Your biggest squee moment of the year?
I'm pretty sure dissociation isn't generally what people think about when talking about squeeing, but that's pretty much the only reaction available when you read the homestuck epilogues. Later in the year we actually had homestuck^2, so more squeeing and more dissociation. Yay!
▲ The most missed of your old fandoms?
Definitely homestuck. I also miss the old enthusiasm I had for Overwatch in general. It seems like it's time to move on, although I feel so sorry for all the stories I still have to tell.
▲ The fandom you haven't tried yet but you want to?
The Witcher. I played the game between November and December, and I've finally watched the series during the first days of the year, and I'm itching to write something about it!
▲ Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?
I am not really looking forward to anything this year. I just hope to be able to write all the things I wanna write, and to have fun while the world catches fire around me.
