Main fandom
For once, the easiest question ever: the whole franchise of the Witcher--and I haven’t finished yet. I played Witcher 3: Wild Hunt twice, I read all the books (and I’m planning on re-reading them) and I watched the Netflix series a couple times. I wrote so much fic, I met so many new people in the fandom and I’m still hungry. I honestly hope for the hype to continue into 2021 because it was since Overwatch I didn’t feel so creative in a fandom.
Favorite film
Probably a tie between Jojo Rabbit, Knives Out and Pride between the “serious” titles; Dumplin’ and Easy A get a special mention because they’re good comedies, and Birds of Prey because it was such an enjoyable badass movie and it was the last thing I’ve watched in an actual theater with my friends before everything closed up.
Favorite book
Hands down A Conspiracy of Truths, by Alexandra Rowland, because it’s such a love song to storytelling I just couldn’t not love it. I’m totally planning on getting my hands on A Choir of Lies to read this year. Special mention to Kushiel’s Dart, by Jacqueline Carey, for being the historical fantasy that my sixteen-years-old self would’ve loved to bits (delicious worldbuilding, a bit corny in its tone and writing, but it’s still a very enjoyable read), and also to that piece of hot trash that is the Witcher series — specifically The Last Wish and Baptism of Fire.
Favorite album or song
I’ve listened to the soundtrack of The Witcher (both Netflix and TW3) and random slavic/celtic folk and medieval music so much. So much. My top 100 songs playlist on Spotify for this year is basically 95% that and 5% pop songs (that still belong to geraskier playlists...), so I made a game of it on twitter — tell me a number and I’ll tell you if it corresponds to s a pop song (it took quite a few tries).
Favorite serial
I didn’t watch a lot of serial tv this year, despite technically having the time and having a screenwriting class about them, which honestly surprised me—I thought I watched much more… but anyway. At the very beginning of the lockdown I binged Stranger Things and I had a lot of fun with it (even if I’m still upset about a certain character’s death) so I’ll go with that. I haven’t made a separate question about animation, but special mention to the final season of She-ra and to the few episodes of Helluvaboss that have come out.
Favorite game
New category for the year, because a friend shared his Steam library with me and I took advantage of it to hell and back. Other than replaying Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, I tried out some extremely brilliant stuff, very diverse and very different for aesthetics, gameplay and genre -- which makes it very difficult to pick only one winner… so here’s three: oxenfree, hades and stories untold. I’ll probably make a separate post about why, and why I liked/didn’t like the other games, but that’s it for now.
Best new fandom discovery
Stranger things, I think. I haven’t written anything for it yet because my brain is still eaten up by the Witcher, but I’ve definitely read my weight in fanfiction for a few weeks afterwards. I do have a couple plots in my plot drawer, so who knows…
Biggest disappointment
Fuck me sideways with a shark -- that goddamn trashcan fire that is the Artemis Fowl movie. In my old age (recorded laughter) I’ve grown mellow and tolerant about movies adapted from books, because I learned that it’s easier said than done, but this? This is unacceptable. You can read all about my disappointment here, if you feel like it.
Biggest squee
I almost forgot about it because I didn’t write it down but -- this year we got Hiveswap Act 2 and I definitely spent a couple days losing my goddamn mind over it. As much as I love the kids, Homestuck to me is about Alternia and the trolls, and having the chance to walk around the planet and witness once again the society they live in is such a treat. I also enjoyed the lowkey Snowpiercer reference a lot because it’s terrible and apt.
Most missed old fandom
I think I’ve written about this before, but I miss writing for Inception? I don’t actually have plots for my boys but it’s been 10 years and my love for them is still going strong. Arthur is still very much the archetype I fall back onto for my basic characters, but I miss writing the original stick in the mud.
Fandom to try this year
I have so many things to watch/read I don’t even know where to fucking start. Fic-wise, I want to tackle the couple of plots about Stranger Things and the Umbrella Academy that I whipped out months ago.
Fan things to look forward to
Given the fact that everything and their mother has been postponed because of the apocalypse during 2020, it’s almost easier to say what I’m not looking forward to. But one of my 2021 resolutions is to gush more and to whine less, so I’m going to point at random in the void of the time and say Loki, because I’m a little curious, despite the fact that these days I trust Marvel as far as I can throw them (which is to say: I can’t).

A fellow homestuck! Hiveswap is being very fun for now, I enjoyed both acts and also the "friending sim" and pesterquest spinoffs. Definitely reccommend them if you're feeling nostalgic about it. Are you caught up with homestuck^2?

yeah I'm not caught up right now, I keep thinking I'll check it out later... 2021 might be the year to do it, who knows
