recap | january + february 2022

new project for 2022: one post a month with a quick update about fandom discoveries and art+craft projects. seems doable, right? except i’m already behind, but nevermind that.

warning: might contain spoilers

january

fandom+writingi read six of crows by leigh bardugo with the girls at the bookclub, and the only thing that i have to say is that Kaz Brekker is exactly the kind of character i would’ve written in highschool. the very kind of edgy, mysterious, cursed character with a poor little meow meow background, tormented by his traumas and demons and obsessed with his brother-- except more vicious and reckless, which i always fail to bring all the way in. so yeah, that was bait, friends. this feels like when they made me read the raven cycle and expected me not to absolutely fall for ronan lynch, smh. jokes aside, it was a fun read. Bardugo does a great job with banter, i had a very good time. that cliffhanger tho, man.

writing-wise, i managed to get some words in on that ace!geralt commission i have on hold but i just couldn’t get my head into the game. as i’ve been joking with some people for a while-- brain was boiling. writing machine not working. i tried to work on it for a few consecutive days, but i kept second guessing myself and i ended up giving up on it again.

art+craftobviously my energy levels were crap so i didn’t do anything noticeably artistic -- i did splurge on the holidays though and finally bought an ipad with the specific purpose to go back to digital art. so that’s a plan. (btw guess what day it came in in the mail? exactly on the day i ended up at the ER. raincheck.)

february
fandom+writing buckle up bc i had nothing but time at the hospital! did you know that cortisone fucks your sleeping schedule up?

i saved myself from the cliffhanger and read crooked kingdom. i liked it less than the first book plot-wise (i like heists but this felt too extended, too much stuff going on. also inej’s “shadow” subplot felt tacked on for no reason? meh) and i totally found a certain character’s death unnecessary, but it was entertaining and i loved reading all the banter between the characters. ship-wise, nina/mathias is the first het canon couple that made me go awwww in a while, but the rest of the canon couples weren’t anything to write home about. i ended up rolling my eyes really hard at inej/kaz: i liked her whole “i will have you without armor or not at all, Kaz Brekker” speech in six of crows but their dynamic didn't hold up later on. there’s nothing wrong with jesper/wylan -- which is probably why i ended up shipping jesper and kaz (kazper?) more than anything. there’s much more room for angst over there 😂

obviously i needed more kaz brekker, so i watched shadow and bone, which surprised me because i honestly didn’t expect to like it. i wasn’t convinced about freddy carter when i saw him in pictures but as it often happens with me and actors when i see them move and act--well, he just drove the nail in the coffin. i really really like him as kaz brekker, he gave him that whole layer of human that was missing behind his demjin demeanor. the rest of the cast is basically perfect-- and the aesthetic of the whole non-russia thing was so well designed i gasped. the world feels real but also different enough to be interesting, they did a really good job. i unfortunately do not give a flying fuck about alina or mal, but it’s fine, im here for the crows.

hilda + hilda and the mountain king were recommended to me by my bff, who has very good taste in animation. it starts out as a very feel-good show about this kid befriending supernatural critters in the woods where they live … and then she and her mom move to the city. when i started watching i thought it felt a bit like steven universe - learning important lessons through supernatural adventures with friends in a pastel-bright environment with lots of smart takes and some truly excellent lines and characters - but as the story progressed it felt more and more gravity falls-esque, with a lot of uncanny, horrorish events. the movie/season finale literally blew my mind -- the writing blew me away, with the nuance and the interlocking of themes and storylines. it’s been a while since i’ve seen something that felt so well wrapped up.

it’s funny that i was reminded of gravity falls by hilda bc then i watched inside job, another rec by bff. i didn’t know at the time, but alex hirsch and more than a few people that worked on gravity falls worked on the show! and it’s insane. insanely good. every conspiracy theory is real, the shadow government is a thing that exists and it’s absolutely the worst (best) workplace ever. the dialogue on this fucking show people. i don’t even want to know how long it took to write the script. they put everything in it. it’s so full of references im sure i missed 90% of them. please just watch it, i don’t even know where the fuck i should start to describe it.

i felt so much better i even managed to write almost 1000 words about our dnd characters while at the hospital, and when i came home i rewrote the thing about roy and edward feeling suicidal that i had started back in july. it came out almost 3k words (the ending needs work though).

art+crafti had plans to finally bind this favorite blanket of mine whose edge got horribly frayed with the years, or work on the embroidery projects. or on making clothing. or on the fiddle practice (although this is not my fault - the thing needs to be re-stringed asap). or the million of other things i planned to do once i got home from the hospital -- but i couldn’t find the focus. i did try doodling digitally on my new toy, but months of not drawing means that i completely forgot how it works. like i completely lost the process of getting into it, even. so i'm taking it slow, brainstorming my way through a plan. procrastination is an art 😬
